That long auger blade is made up of 3 or 4 shorter extensions bolted together. You start with a standard length blade...auger down to the surface of the ice, add an extension auger some more and keep adding extensions till you break through the ice.

there are 3 or 4 individual extensions on that blade - you start with a normal length of blade and add extensions as needed
