Dispatch: The General

Back

Anywho. It just kind of dawned on me in a really big way this week that my brother is a Marine. Yeah, I know... you'd think I'd have figured this out when i watched him graduate from Boot Camp. Whatever. So, between bouts of weeping I created a video that explains my views on my brother's role as a Marine, my loathing of war, my love of my brother and family, and generally coping with it all. With a dash of personal opinion. I don't believe that we were created to be fighters. As in a great sermon from Don Finley of Life Church (paraphrased), "If we were created to be fighters we'd have tough outer layers, scales and the like. And we'd have big claws and sharp teeth. But instead we're built soft and squishy and huggable. Some more squishy than others..." I completely agree with this. However, because of the world we live in--there really isn't a feasible alternative. Peace is like communism: it's a great concept that will never work because we are people... messed up people at that. Also, I agree with the chorus of this song-- I have seen the others/ their mothers... this fight is not worth fighting for. These are people we're talking about. We can dehumanize it all we want... make them statistics and talk numbers and countries instead of names of men and women. No matter who you are fighting they have a life. They have someone who loves them (we're speaking in generalities, please follow) they love, they have wives, children, mothers, brothers. Sisters. Who love them and care for them and wonder whether they'll ever see them again. Knowing that they're brother is never coming back the same way. I love my brother, I love where I live--even though we have the electoral college, I love people in Iraq, Iran, the Phillipines, Darfur, the people across from me in the hall (ergh, yes, even them.) And I support my brother. But it breaks my heart to see people being killed--it's not right. And nothing can make it so. A necessary evil if you will. I know a few of you are going to read that and scream, "War is never necessary!!! If we just talk through things we can work it out!!!" or however you'd word the same basic concept. If you have an idea where we don't need war--for God's sake, please let me know. And your congressman, and please join the U. N. Because if you can make peace work for the world, then you are greater than God. Because you have trumped free will and the evils of men. So without further adieu, The General by Dispatch. Please visit and comment it on youtube if you would. Thank you, and thank you for opening your mind with me to see the other side of war and peace. there was a decorated general with a heart of gold, that likened him to all the stories he told of past battles, won and lost, and legends of old a seasoned veteran in his own time on the battlefield, he gained respectful fame with many medals of bravery and stripes to his name he grew a beard as soon as he could to cover the scars on his face and always urged his men on but on the eve of a great battle with the infantry in dream the old general tossed in his sleep NO MESSING with its meaning he awoke from the night to tell what he had seen and walked slowly out of his tent all the men held tall with their chests in the air, with courage in their blood and a fire in their stare it was a grey morning and they all wondered how they would fare till the old general told them to go home [CHORUS:] He said: I have seen the others and I have discovered that this fight is not worth fighting I have seen their mothers and I will no other to follow me where I'm going So,take a shower, shine your shoes you got no time to lose you are young men you must be living Take a shower, shine your shoes you got no time to lose you are young men you must be living go now you are forgiven but the men stood fast with their guns on their shoulders not knowing what to do with the contradicting orders the general said he would do his own duty but would extend it no further the men could go as they pleased not a man moved, their eyes gazed straight ahead till one by one they stepped back and not a word was said and the old general was left with his own words echoing in his head he then prepared to fight [CHORUS] go now you are forgiven
